The inspiration for this design comes from the tukutuku patterns niho taniwha and pātiki  which I have used to represent  both our kaitiaki Arai te Uru and Niniwa who protect North and South Hokianga

He is acknowledged as a great explorer and navigator and named the harbour, Te Puna i te Ao Mrama, (The Spring of the World of Light) on his arrival. Kowhaiwhai and tukutuku taniko patterns have been used in this design. Puhoro is representive of warriors, waka, and the moana, swiftness and speed.
