Nursing Calf With Mother Buffalo This was fun to photographThis elephant mother and young calf were photographed in Madikwe Reserve in South Africa. I observed many young elephants at various stages of development including those still nursing. Elephants typically nurse up to eighteen months but can continue much longer if the young is not developing as it should. Family units of various age females travel together for safety. Males leave these herds once they can care for themselves.
