The boat was a Thames sailing barge which was originally named Lady Jean. It was renamed after MP and naval officer Alan Herbert who died in November 1971. Used as a training barge for trips along the Thames, she sailed between the Thames Estuary and Orfordness. Students on board studied ecology, geography, maritime history as well as commerce and shipping. Henry Grant Collection
